Engagement Photos with Dogs | Dos and Don’ts

February 19, 2024

Engagement photos with dogs have a special place in my heart! After all, my fur babies are my whole world! I had the most amazing time photographing Sarah and Cruz this past winter, accompanied by their sweet fur babies Otis and Moose! These four were total troopers – it was a rainy day in the Portland area, and that didn’t stop us at all!

Before we get into the beautiful photos, let me share some tips if you also want engagement photos with dogs!

That’s a fantastic idea for a blog post! Including dogs in engagement photos can add a wonderful, personal touch to the images. Here are some tips to help you create a successful and enjoyable photo session:

1. Choose the Right Location:

Select a location that is dog-friendly and provides a comfortable environment for both you and your fur babies. Parks, beaches, or open fields with natural lighting are excellent options.

2. Time Your Session Well:

Opt for a time when the weather is mild and the lighting is soft, such as during the golden hour (an hour after sunrise or before sunset). This helps avoid harsh shadows and makes the overall atmosphere more pleasant.

3. Prioritize Pet Comfort:

Ensure your dogs are comfortable in the chosen location and consider their needs. Bring water, snacks, and any necessary items to keep them content during breaks.

4. Include Props and Toys:

Bring props and toys to capture the dogs’ attention and create playful moments. This could include a favorite ball, frisbee, or even a cute bandana or sign announcing the engagement!

5. Bring a Helper:

Having an assistant or a friend to help manage the dogs can be invaluable. They can be responsible for holding leashes, entertaining the dogs, or providing treats to grab their attention.

6. Get Down to Their Level:

Capture genuine interactions by getting down to the dogs’ eye level. This perspective creates a more intimate and natural feel in the photos. Alternatively, you could sit down nearby them or pick them up if they are small! These photos are some of my favorite.

7. Plan for Breaks:

Dogs can get tired or distracted easily, so plan for breaks during the session. This allows everyone to relax, regroup, and ensures a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

8. Be Patient:

Patience is key when bringing pets into the mix with photos. Allow time for the dogs to adjust to the environment, and be prepared to capture those perfect moments when they happen.

9. Safety First:

Prioritize safety by using secure leashes or harnesses. Always be aware of the surroundings to avoid any potential hazards.

10. Clean Up:

Make sure to bring poop bags to clean up after your pet! Also, don’t forget some towels to wipe off muddy paws before getting back into the car!

11. Most Importantly, Have Fun:

You are totally going to rock your engagement photos! And having your dogs there will be so special. Remember to have fun, and get playful!
